Discovery Sessions
The following activities are designed to encourage place-based learning in a beautiful outdoor environment.
Wilderness Skills
This session is designed to teach students basic outdoor survival skills. We partake in hands on activities to help them stay safe, and learn to appreciate the natural world around them.
Activities Include:
Fire building, plant identification, knot skills, locating water sources
Forest Ecology
Made up of 70% forest, Camp Artaban is home to thousands of different indigenous types of flora and fauna. In this course, we study the incredible ecosystems around us, and our own role in preserving the environment.
Activities include:
Nature walk, plant identification, land history
Team Building
From breaking the ice, to strengthening relationships within an established group, this course is all about learning how to collaborate with others. Through a series of challenging exercises, students will develop the ability to communicate under pressure, and learn to support each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
Activities include:
Low ropes course, scavenger hunts, trust exercises
Sports Skills
With a large indoor gymnasium, volleyball court, and countless open fields, this session is all about developing hand-eye coordination, ball control, and working together in a team.
Activities include:
3-way soccer, floor hockey, tetherball, horseshoes, capture the flag
Shelter Building
Either working solo or in teams, students are able to study the basics of efficient outdoor structures, and create their own shelters based on what they learn.
Archery
With many high-end bows and arrows at our disposal, students will learn safety and etiquette on the archery range, proper shooting technique, and build upon their fine motor and coordination skills.
Climbing
Our 25ft climbing wall is an amazing way to build upper body strength, and develop problem solving skills. Taking up to four climbers at a time, this activity teaches safety and terminology, rope tying, and the basic communication skills between climber and belayer.
Canoeing
With the entirety of Long Bay to explore, our fleet of canoes are a great way to take large groups out onto the water. Our canoes seat 2-4 depending on passenger size, and are a great way to foster team spirit while building great coordination skills.
Hiking
From incredible views, to scenic beaches, our many hiking trails are a great way to explore many of the natural wonders of the province. Each of our trails have varying levels of difficulty and length, and are able to accommodate hikers of all skill-levels.
Activities include:
Brigade Bay, Lost Lake, Mount Artaban, Bert’s Bluff, Centre Bay
Craft Skills
Our incredible art studio has an enormous variety of craft supplies to bring all your creative ideas to life. This session is a great place to foster imagination, develop fine-motor skills, and work with a variety of tools and techniques.
Activities include:
Sculptures, candle making, mosaics, beading, independent creation
Rowing
Comfortably seating up to four passengers each, our row boats are a great way to casually explore the water and shores of Long Bay. This session strengthens hand-eye coordination skills, builds upper body strength, and develops strong problem solving skills.
Tidal Pools
Camp Artaban has a long stretch of beaches that are perfect for exploring aquatic ecosystems up close. This Discovery Session is a great opportunity to learn about marine biology, and the biodiversity of British Columbia’s unique shoreline.
